Puppy Foundation

Our Puppy foundation class is our entry level class for puppies 8 - 16 weeks old at start of class and that have had their first vaccination. (If your puppy is over 16 weeks old, please contact us to disucss your options). All classes, unless otherwise stated, run for 6 sessions with 1 week's break after week 3. NOTE: CLASSES WILL TAKE PLACE OUTSIDE.

Face Coverings will be needed for classes until the Covid restrictions are relaxed.
At this current time, we can only allow 1 owner per dog, but we will let you know as soon as this changes.

The socialisation period is critcially important for the behavioural health of our dogs and this class is designed to capitilise on what remains of this key develpomental period and provide the foundations of the core training skills. If your dog meets the age criteria for this class, then we highly recommend this as the best class to start your puppy's journey.

All our puppy classes centre around positive training for puppies and young dogs.

In our Puppy Foundation class your puppy will make new friends and develop self-confidence as puppy builds lifelong social skills. Watch your puppy demonstrate new behaviours and flourish in a stimulating environment while having a whole lot of fun!

Our skillful and friendly trainers will show you how to train your puppy using positive training techniques that make learning fast, fun, and motivating… for both of you!

Our Puppy Foundation class includes:

  • Basic Obedience – sit, down, stay, leave, come here
  • Play Skills - Understanding and managing puppy play
  • Social Skills – with other puppies and with humans, build confidence in a variety of settings, with exercises to help prevent aggression
  • Distraction Skills –  Starts the process of learning to focus and work in a group setting
  • All Things Puppy – nipping, chewing, house training, and how to deal with these issues in a positive way

Recommended by Vets and fully insured and supported by glowing testimonials.

"Excellent class. Nick understands the different breeds of dogs and their different characteristics. Very friendly, fun, professional, willing to help with other issues. We feel we have been trained to train Chloe - in practical simple steps. Now it is down to us!"  Naiomi and Chloe

In addition to the Foundation class for your little stars, we offer a range of support options including a 1-to-1 puppy visit if you don't have time for the whole class or you prefer 1-1 training.

We also offer a Puppy SOS telephone service for when you just need advice from experts.

If we do not have a Puppy class in your area, please check out our online services.

If you've got any questions, don't hesitate to contact us on 01296 323000.

*Please note: By agreeing to our Terms and Conditions, you agree that should further Covid restrictions be implemented locally or nationally or any other unforeseen cirumstance that prevents us from holding in-person classes, for example; your instructor is isolating or it is deemed to be unsafe for any other reason, for example: extreme temperatures, lightning and other extreme weather events, we will provide the class live and online using Zoom.

Early socialisation is incredibly important for puppies’ to stand the best chance of developing into a well-rounded dog and because this window of opportunity is very small, Puppy Stars are happy to take puppies 1 week after their first injection.

This may be contrary to what you have been told by your Vet. "However Veterinarians specialising in behaviour recommend that owners take advantage of every safe opportunity to expose young puppies to the great variety of stimuli that they will experience in their lives. Enrolling in puppy classes prior to three months of age can be an excellent means of improving training, strengthening the human-animal bond, and socialising puppies in an environment where risk of illness can be minimised." AVSAB

To download the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour position statement – CLICK HERE. The link will take you to Puppy Stars website where you can download a number of free resources or you may prefer to visit the AVSAB website.

At Puppy Stars we will take all reasonable precautions and disinfect the training area with a Veterinary disinfectant before classes start.

We would encourage you carry puppies form your car to the training venue under your puppy is fully vacinated.

However the final decision must be yours.

Please do not bring a puppy to class that is unwell.

  • Please do not feed your dog before class.
  • Please, no slip leads or choke chains to be used in class.
  • Please keep all dogs on a lead unless an instructor tells you otherwise.
  • Please do not bring your bitch to class if she is in season (you are welcome to attend and watch).
  • Please do not bring any dog to class if it is ill. If you are unsure if you should attend class please telephone to discuss.

Note: Except by prior arrangement, your contract with Puppy Stars Ltd is to provide dog training in the form of classes and workshops.

Puppy Stars' Trainers are free to work with you on a 1-1 basis and unless by prior arrangement, do so as independent consultants and not as representatives of Puppy Stars Ltd.

If you work directly with the trainer and not Puppy Stars Ltd, your trainer will be responsible for all correspondence and financial transactions.

As a working practice, very occasionally it is necessary to cancel the class at late notice for medical emergencies. If this does happen we will attempt to contact you and inform you of the revised arrangements.

Classes which take place inside will follow Covid secure guidlines and the venue Risk Assessment, this will include the use of face coverings/masks at all times (face visors can be worn if you are exempt from wearing a facemask).

To enable us to return to in-person classes, we need to introduce a number of changes, some of which may feel restrictive, but as a responsible business, we have a ‘Duty of Care’ to anybody we come into contact with, to maintain our own safety and the safety of others.

I am sure you can imagine that to work during the pandemic we need to have suitable safety protocols in place to reduce the risk of infection to minimum and this will mean classes will look very different from what we are previously used to.

Our risk assessment is based on the current CFSG guidance which can be found here:-http://www.cfsg.org.uk/coronavirus/_layouts/15/start.aspx#/  and is updated as the guidance changes.

I have listed the key points from our Risk Assessment below:-

I will postpone our class if:-

  • I am showing any signs or symptoms of Covid19 infection
  • If anybody in my house is showing any signs or symptoms of Covid19 infection or have been in close contact with anybody outside of my immediate household who is showing signs or symptoms of Covid19
  • If I am advised to self-isolate by the Government Test and Trace process

Please do not attend or you will be asked to leave the class, if:-

  • You are showing any signs or symptoms of Covid19 infection or feeling unwell
  • Anybody in your household or that you have been in close contact with outside of your immediate household is showing any signs or symptoms of Covid19 infection
  • If you have been advised to self-isolate by the Government Test and Trace process

Please arrive in plenty of time and park to maintain social distance of 2m, both in the car park and while walking to the training area.

Please stay in your car until 5 minutes before the class starts, please give people time to leave the previous class.

After class, please leave promptly one at a time maintaining a social distance of 2m.

Please do not bring your dog on a flexi-lead. A fixed length lead will be required of approximately 2m.

To maintain social distance and keep cross contamination risks to a minimum, please do not let your dogs meet on lead.

Please bring hand sanitiser and as a minimum sanitise your hands upon arrival and exit from the training venue. There will also be a hand sanitiser available should you forget.

Strictly no spectators and only one owner per puppy.

Please bare with us, we will be doing our best to provide the best training expereince we can while doing our very best to keep you and your families safe.

There will be no toilets available.

I will at all times maintain 2m distance and will not greet your dog. (Please do not let your dog pull towards me, as much as I would love to say hello, I will have to move away).

If I need to take your dog’s lead, I will follow the established handover protocols and these will be communicated at the time.

Please use a face covering if you feel more comfortable and please prepare your dog for seeing face coverings on others too by giving them lots of tasty treats while wearing it, prior to arrival at the class.

All potentially contaminated wipes, gloves and masks etc that you use must be taken home with you and disposed of properly.

Please have plenty of tasty treats available and any equipment (toys etc) you may need to use.

The class will go-ahead outside even if the weather is unpleasant, however if it is predicted to be unsafe, for example: extreme temperatures, lightning and other extreme weather events, we will provide the class online using Zoom. https://zoom.us

We will use the Met office weather guidance to provide the reference for our Risk Assessment and the subsequent decisions. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk

The Basic Puppy training course has been so helpful for our little Beagle, Lexi and the improvement since week 1 is so clear to see. We have taken all of the things that Nick has taught us and used them at home to train her as much as we can. She has developed in to a puppy who is happy around other puppies, dogs and people. On day one she hid under the chair in the training room, now she bounds up to people and other dogs! Thanks Nick. We will be booking in for the next stage when there are dates. Highly recommended.
